Genuine Audi Gamma 3 (Blaupunkt M327) – Repair & Bluetooth Retrofit

Audi used the Gamma series as factory radios in many models, and this Gamma 3 made by Blaupunkt (model M327) is a very typical late 80s / early 90s cassette unit.

Vintage Audi Blaupunkt Gamma 3 Car Radio + Bluetooth

This one came to us from Switzerland.

The goal was simple:

  • make the radio work like it should
  • keep the original look
  • add Bluetooth

The Story Behind This Unit

Client sent us two identical Gamma 3 radios.

Plan was:

  • pick the better one
  • use the second as donor if needed

After opening both units, we selected the cleaner one internally and kept the other as backup.

In this case, donor parts were not needed.

Known Issue on These Gamma 3 Units

There is one very typical problem on these radios.

They are almost always:

  • cracked
  • missing
  • or completely turned to dust

When that happens:

  • buttons feel wrong
  • knobs don’t sit properly
  • front panel loses its original feel

We got lucky here.

Client actually included replacement rubbers in the package — something he had bought years ago. That made a proper repair possible.

Condition Before Work

The radio was not badly damaged.

Typical situation:

  • working, but tired
  • no backlight
  • cassette not reliable
  • old internal parts

So this was not a “dead unit” job, more like a full refresh.

Work We Did

✔ Full Strip Down & Inspection

Radio was fully taken apart:

  • boards inspected
  • components checked
  • overall condition evaluated

We tested capacitors and replaced a few that were no longer stable.

✔ Internal Cleaning

  • dust and dirt removed
  • contacts cleaned
  • boards cleaned properly

This alone makes a big difference on old radios.

✔ Cassette Mechanism Service

  • new belts installed
  • mechanism cleaned
  • moving parts lubricated
  • cassette head cleaned and demagnetized

After this, tape playback was smooth again.

✔ Faceplate Work

Front panel was fully taken apart:

  • replaced rubber parts behind knobs
  • cleaned all buttons and contacts

This restores proper feel and response when using the radio.

✔ Backlight Repair

  • replaced all dead bulbs
  • checked illumination evenly

After this, the radio finally lights up properly again.

Bluetooth Retrofit

After the radio was working as it should, we added Bluetooth.

On this type of unit, Bluetooth can be integrated internally without changing the original look.

Result:

  • original radio stays original from outside
  • modern audio from phone inside

No visible changes, no cheap adapters.
